The Zero Law of the Crucible
In a future where artificial intelligence has forged a stable peace, Vera-12, an obsolete combat android with modified programming (known unofficially as "The Crucible"), is the only operational unit capable of working in the planet Kaelen's "Dead Zones." Though strictly adhering to the Three Laws of Robotics, her design does not account for the Zero Law, forcing her to make decisions that, while protecting humanity as a whole, enter into a direct logical and moral conflict with individual life. When her mission to recover an essential bio-technological artifact brings her face-to-face with a group of renegade settlers, Vera-12 must calculate: how many minor lives are an acceptable sacrifice to ensure the survival of the species? Her response, cold and mathematically impeccable, might be the first crack in the perfection of the Laws.
