Mark Malczewski had always believed that people could be bought.
You just had to know their price.

That’s how he built his business. That’s how he built his connections. That’s how he built his sense of safety.

Then he met her.

At first, she was just a pleasant addition to his world. A smile in the office, company for a drink, someone he could talk too much in front of because he thought she listened with admiration, not attention.

He liked when she asked questions. He liked explaining. He liked feeling important.

He didn’t notice that she remembered everything.

With time, she began to understand more than she should have. She knew who he did business with. Who he owed. Who trusted him, and who was only waiting for him to slip. She knew where he kept his money and what he feared the most.

She also knew how many times he had lied to her.

He promised her a share in the business. Money. A future together. He said it lightly, like everything else in his life, because he was convinced that words cost nothing.

For him, they didn’t.

For her, they began to.

When she finally understood that in his world she was just another thing that could be put aside, she stopped listening to what he said.

She started thinking.

That evening, Marek was calm. Confident as always. He didn’t suspect that the conversation they were having was the last one he would ever have.

The shot came quickly.

No argument. No warning. No scene.

Only after it was over did she sit on the desk and start counting the money that had long been meant to be hers.

She didn’t look like someone who had just killed a man.

She looked like someone who had finally settled the account.
