I wanted to create a scene of them walking through an area at dusk or dawn, low light and an era sense of fear walking through an unknown area.
I like the finally result, however the lighting is not as I wanted it. I wanted to be able to show the HDRI on the dome, but not have the dome emit light, so I could position lights as I wanted them. But every time I dimmed the dome, and used only the scene light , the dome was not visible.
If anyone knows how to do this feel free to comment, I would be very grateful.

A great image regardless of your troubles.
I run into this also, balancing light and the visible dome, though I struggle in the opposite direction - getting sunlight where I want it. Have you tried using simple sky domes like those from Orestes of Flinks? These produce little direct light.
A great all-around camera is available from Most Digital Creations (or was last time I looked) with all of his characters that has no headlamp and stays in focus through a broad range of 'lengths'.
