The Majlis plays a central role in Arab society, where the elder sits, discusses the important issues of the community and makes decisions.
There may also be a secluded spot where guests are received and entertained.
Majlis can be an ordinary living room where friends (usually male) are received, an intellectual salon or an elite club: it all depends on the wealth of the owner. It is not customary to serve hot food here, but you can drink tea and coffee, eat nuts and dates, smoke incense.
In the big majlises, qasids are read, concerts and holidays are organized. Businessmen and politicians conduct formal negotiations in the office, while the really important issues are resolved in the majlis.
