SLDASM File Format Explained

The SLDASM file format is a native SolidWorks Assembly file used in computer-aided design (CAD). It references component part files and subassemblies to define a multi-component CAD assembly.

SLDASM File Format Details What It Stores It stores spatial relationships, mates, component hierarchies, and design metadata. It primarily stores assembly definitions and references external component files; correct display usually depends on access to those referenced files. Primary Use Cases Managing mechanical engineering assemblies. Defining parametric constraints between CAD components. Generating or supporting CAD-based bills of materials (BOMs) for assemblies. Strengths Assemblies reference part files instead of duplicating full geometry, which can help keep files more manageable. Preserves complex parametric relationships and mates. Limitations Requires external part files to display the assembly correctly. Limited native interoperability outside SolidWorks without conversion.
