SLDPRT File Format Explained

SLDPRT is the native 3D parametric part file format created by Dassault Systemes for SolidWorks. It is widely used in mechanical engineering, product design, and CAD workflows to build individual components.

SLDPRT File Format Details What It Stores It stores 3D part geometry and related design data such as features, materials, and metadata; in SolidWorks, it can also preserve parametric history and sketch-based feature definitions. Primary Use Cases Parametric 3D part modeling and engineering. Creating components for larger CAD assemblies (SLDASM). Used in manufacturing workflows and often exported to neutral formats for CNC machining. Source data for high-fidelity 3D printing conversion. Strengths Can preserve editable parametric history and feature definitions when opened in compatible SolidWorks tools. Stores exact CAD geometry rather than only mesh triangles. Supports precise CAD geometry suitable for manufacturing workflows. Limitations Proprietary format with restricted native editability outside SolidWorks. Most slicers and mesh-based 3D tools require SLDPRT files to be converted first. Common Software Support Supported by SolidWorks, eDrawings Viewer, Autodesk Fusion, and Autodesk Inventor.
