USDZ File Format Explained

USDZ is a zero-compression, unencrypted ZIP archive package format for Universal Scene Description (USD) assets. It is widely used for delivering 3D and augmented reality content on Apple platforms.

USDZ File Format Details What It Stores The format bundles one or more USD files and their referenced assets into a single package. A USDZ package may contain USD, USDA, USDC, PNG, JPEG, M4A, MP3, and WAV files. Primary Use Cases Delivering web-based AR content via Quick Look on supported Apple platforms. Showcasing 3D products in e-commerce and retail environments. Sharing animated 3D assets across mobile messaging and mail apps. Strengths Single-file portability eliminates broken texture paths. Designed for efficient direct access to packaged assets without decompressing the archive. Native, plugin-free integration within the Apple ecosystem. Limitations Read-only format that is difficult to edit directly without unpacking. Primarily restricted to Apple platforms for native AR viewing. Common Software Support Supported by Apple Quick Look, Reality Composer and Reality Composer Pro workflows, OpenUSD tools, Adobe Substance 3D Painter's USDz export template, and USD-capable DCC or platform workflows with USDZ import/export support.
