3D Printable Mug Casting Tool for Resin and Plaster
Description
Manufacture your own classic mugs or create perfect master models with this professional-grade Split Cup Mold system. Engineered for precision and ease of use, this multi-part casting tool features a solid base plate with perfectly toleranced hemispherical registration keys (alignment domes) to ensure the two side halves lock together flawlessly every time.
Whether you are 3D printing this to cast resin or plaster, using it as a master for silicone mold making, or CNC machining a durable production mold out of tooling board, these high-quality CAD files provide exactly what you need.
Key Features:
Classic Mug Design: Features a timeless, smooth coffee cup silhouette with a comfortable, ergonomic handle.
Precision Split Mold System: Designed as a 2-part block mold with an interlocking base plate to prevent shifting and leaking during the casting process.
NURBS Precision: Created natively in Plasticity. The included STEP file ensures flawless, mathematically perfect curved surfaces for CNC machining, completely free of the low-poly faceting found in standard mesh files.
Versatile Manufacturing: Ideal for casting resin, plaster, jesmonite, concrete, or as a master for ceramic slip-casting workflows.
Included File Formats:
STL: High-resolution meshes, ready to slice and 3D print.
OBJ: Standard format compatible with most 3D rendering and visualization software.
STEP / STP: Solid CAD file, perfect for CNC CAM toolpath generation or parametric editing.
Plasticity: The original source file, allowing you to easily adjust tolerances, add custom logos to the mug, or scale the design.
3. Settings and Manufacturing Instructions
For FDM / Resin 3D Printing:
Print Orientation: * Base Plate: Print flat on the build plate.
Mold Halves: Print resting on their flat outside faces (the backs of the blocks) so the inner mug cavity faces upwards. This ensures the smoothest surface finish for the casting area.
Supports: You will not need supports for the main cavities if oriented correctly. You may need minor supports if your printer struggles with the bridging inside the alignment dimples.
Layer Height: 0.12mm to 0.16mm. A finer layer height is highly recommended to minimize layer lines inside the mug cavity, reducing the need for post-sanding.
Infill: 20% - 30% (Cubic or Gyroid pattern). A sturdy infill is required to withstand the clamping force when tying the mold halves together.
Walls/Perimeters: Use at least 4 walls to ensure the mold is completely watertight.
Usage Tip: Always apply a suitable mold release agent (like petroleum jelly, paste wax, or silicone spray) to the inner walls and alignment keys before pouring your casting material. Use strong rubber bands or trigger clamps to hold the two halves securely together.
For CNC Machining:
Software: Import the .STEP file directly into your CAM software (e.g., Fusion 360) for exact geometry recognition.
Tooling: Use a flat end-mill for roughing out the block and clearing the main cavity. Switch to a ball-nose end-mill for the 3D finishing passes to capture the smooth curves of the mug and the round registration domes perfectly.
Material: Renshape (tooling board), Delrin, or Aluminum are excellent choices for creating a permanent, heavy-duty production mold.
