3. Settings and Manufacturing Instructions
For FDM / Resin 3D Printing:
Print Orientation: Print standing upright, resting flat on its bottom base.
Supports: NONE. This is a 100% print-in-place design.
Layer Height: 0.16mm to 0.20mm is ideal. Finer layer heights will make the rounded scalloped edges look incredibly smooth.
Infill: 10% - 15% (Lightning or Gyroid pattern). Since it's mostly walls, you don't need much infill except for the solid bottom base.
Walls/Perimeters: 3 to 4 walls. This ensures the pen holder is sturdy and gives the ribbed texture a solid feel.
Material Recommendation: Matte PLA or Silk PLA looks phenomenal on curved surfaces like this, hiding layer lines and highlighting the shadows of the ribs.
For CNC Machining:
Software: Import the .STEP file directly into your CAM software (e.g., Fusion 360, Mastercam).
Tooling: Use a flat end-mill to clear out the main interior pocket. Use a ball-nose end-mill for the 3D profiling passes on the exterior scalloped walls to capture the smooth, continuous curves.
Material: Hardwoods like walnut or maple, or even machinable wax/acrylic, will yield a stunning, premium desk accessory.
