My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is an animated television series based on Hasbro's My Little Pony franchise and marking the start of its fourth incarnation. The series follows a studious pony named Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong), her dragon assistant Spike (Cathy Weseluck), and her friends Applejack (Ashleigh Ball), Rarity (Tabitha St. Germain), Fluttershy (Andrea Libman), Rainbow Dash (Ball) and Pinkie Pie (Libman). The six ponies, collectively known as the "Mane Six", go on adventures and help others around Equestria, solving problems with their friendships.
The main character, a unicorn (later an alicorn) named Twilight Sparkle, spends her days poring over books, never taking a moment to socialize with other ponies. Her mentor, Princess Celestia, seeing her favorite student immersed in her studies, gives her a mission: find true friends. The heroine and her dragon assistant, Spike, travel to Ponyville, where they meet the devoted Rainbow Dash, the generous Rarity, the honest Applejack, the kind Fluttershy, and the always cheerful Pinkie Pie. Together, they find themselves in various situations, helping each other and others solve their problems (though sometimes they create them themselves), getting to know the inhabitants and corners of Equestria, occasionally arguing over trivial matters, but always making up. Every time Twilight learned something new about friendship, she wrote letters to Celestia about it, but when she became a princess, this need disappeared, and she and her friends began keeping a diary.
Spike is a male dragon and one of the seven main characters in the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. He is Twilight Sparkle's best friend and sidekick, using his magical fire breath to send scrolls to and from Princess Celestia. In the original series and other media, Spike is referred to as a "baby" dragon, but in 2018, director Jim Miller stated that Spike was already a teenager by this point. In the season eight episode "Molt," Spike gains a pair of wings as a result of the "molt" stage of dragon maturation.
