Koalas are marsupials that live in the eucalyptus forests of eastern and southern Australia. They are about 24 33 inches long and weigh up to 31 pounds, and are sometimes called koala bears because they look like small bears. Koalas are mostly nocturnal, spending a lot of time sitting or sleeping to conserve energy. They can eat more than a pound of eucalyptus leaves a day, and their digestive system is good at tolerating the toxic compounds in the leaves.
