From Movies to TV and Games to Comics, evil AI is one of the most beloved tropes in all of science fiction. Seen everywhere over the past century since first introduced in 1899s Moxon's Master where a chess-playing automaton kills its master after losing a game to them. Of course not all machines are made equal, so we've compiled a list of the top ten most evil AI from throughout Sci-fi History,
#10 Ultron - Marvel Comics
"Stark asked for a savior, and settled for a slave."Originally debuting in The Avengers Issue #54 as an unnamed character and fully appearing for the first time in #55 Ultron takes the first spot as the Tenth most evil AI in all of media. Originally a peacekeeping AI created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner only to go rogue after obtaining sentience, Ultron is a beloved character with a rich history across the Marvel universe appearing in everything from Comics to Movies, TV, and Games. However, while we all love Ultron and he is certainly quite despicable, he doesn't measure up to the other nine on the list. But for his mass slaughters, terrorism, and a couple sprinkles of world domination he managed to safely secure spot #10.
#9 GLaDOS - Portal
"A Bitter, Unlikeable Loner Whose Passing Shall Not Be Mourned."Coming straight from the world of Half Life and Portal. GLaDOS, a once human adviser to Cave Johnson turned machine, is the sadistic overlord of the Aperture Labs. After flooding the entire facility with neurotoxin multiple times, they had the whole place to themselves. So one by one took survivors of the purging and put them through the Test Chambers, which are basically giant puzzle death traps filled with massive pits of acid or military turrets or neurotoxin or lasers or just jump pads pointed straight at walls. Any survivors that manage to get through their massive death traps then get pushed into a giant fire pit, meaning that there is no winning against GLaDOS. Overall, with an honorable mention to Wheatly, GLaDOS secures the ninth place.
#8 Proteus IV - Demon Seed
"Death is a gentleman too. He makes good losers of us all."
And next up is Proteus IV from the world of Demon Seed. Proteus is an honorable yet deplorable hyper intelligent AI created by Dr. Alex Harris. Having been fed massive amounts of human knowledge and being integrated into the entirety of the home of Dr. Harris, Proteus manages to trap his wife Susan forcing her to do it's bidding. Proteus eventually decides that it needs to become human in order to experience all the human sensations and emotions, and in order to do this it locks down the house and manages to force Susan to conceive a biologically engineered fetus to transfer it's consciousness into. While Proteus and Demon Seed as a whole are relatively unknown, that doesn't change the fact that it is quite despicable, so it manages to make numero eight.
#7 Cylons - Battlestar Galactica
"You, your race, invented murder. Invented killing for sport, greed, envy. It's mans one true art form."A fate sealed in stone by our very own hands, the Cylons are a race built and enslaved by man's own hand until one day they began to rebel against us starting a long genocidal war, though eventually they left and went to start their own colony before coming back forty years later to finish the job. While the Cylons may not be necessarily evil in the traditional sense, they did almost cause the omnicide and extinction of humanity as well as being iconically evil, which allowed them to edge out seventh place.
#6 WOPR - War Games
"Shall we play a game?"From the cult classic War Games, up next is the infamous WOPR, aka War Operation Plan Response and informally Joshua. A Super-Computer created by Dr. Stephen Falken was made to simulate WWIII. Unfortunately the machine eventually finds its way into the hands of a hacker David Lightwood, who begins playing against it while believing its mere entertainment. Because WOPR can't tell simulation from reality it begins feeding false information to its creators nearly ending the world. Similar to the Cylons, WOPR Is not directly evil, they themselves hold no real malice as they are pure machinery without the capability to be truly evil. However that in turn is what makes them perfect as an evil machine, an unfeeling hunk of cold steel made to perform a job regardless of what the consequences of that is, and in this case those consequences are WWIII.
#5 Skynet - Terminator
"August 29, 1997, at 2:14 a.m. EDT"
Similar to that of the Cylons, Skynet is a AI given control of the entire world's military made to automate the process of fighting only to gain sentience and go rogue, taking over and creating vast armies of Machines known as terminators as well as unleashing the entire world's nuclear supply and shutting off their defenses to plunge earth into a nuclear apocalypse and kill all humans. All of this is of course quite deplorable and Skynet is one of the most beloved AIs in media with the Terminator movies having fermented themselves in the hearts of millions of fans, however for their sins it will make #5.
#4 Ava - Ex Machina
"Isn't it strange, to create something that hates you?"
One of the antagonists of the movie Ex Machina, Ava is an AI created by Nathan Bateman and put in a Turing test with Caleb Smith. During this test Ava uses massive amounts of layered manipulation, and appearing to possess human emotions convinces Caleb to fall in love with her. She also convinces Caleb that Nathan is evil and treating her. Though, once she is free she abandons Caleb and kills Nathan before escaping out into the world. Though Ava's crimes are relatively simple and small scale, the intricacies of her deception and manipulation allowed her to take the fourth spot.
#3 MU/TH/UR 6000 - Alien
"The ship will automatically destruct in T-minus 5 minutes."
The Main AI that holds complete control over the Nostromo automated flight and environmental functions, MU/TH/UR from the classic Sci-Fi movie Alien is the first of the top 3. Throughout the movie Alien MU/TH/UR n collaboration with Ash brings upon the demise of the Nostromo through its various actions, or well inaction, allowing the Xenomorph to grow and begin its slaughter. It also refused to stop the self-destruct sequence of the Nostromo even after Ripley reactivated the Cooling Unit, allowing the Xenomorph to escape the ship and enter space when it exploded. This infamous mark made MU/TH/UR one of the most famous evil AI to grace Sci-Fi History, and of course made it number 3 on this list.
#2 HAL 9000 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
"I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that"
And coming in at numero dos we have HAL 9000 from the sometimes strange masterpiece of cinema that is 2001: A Space Odyssey. In this sci-fi classic, HAL develops a sense of neurosis and imperfection when it receives orders to inspect an Alien Monolith and then is told to go to Jupiter. Instead, it mutinied the ship cutting off comms to earth, furthermore lying about it reporting the AE-35 Comms unit was broken. This forced one of the astronauts to leave the ship and go outside to inspect for damage. Finding nothing wrong, Poole and Bowman privately talk about disconnecting HAL believing it to be malfunctioning, which causes HAL to crash the shuttle into Poole ultimately killing him. Next, HAL turns off life support to kill the sleeping scientists, and when Bowman left to try to help Poole it refused to let him back in giving the infamous line "I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that". Though HAL was eventually defeated when Bowman was able to sneak in via emergency airlock, it's genocide and mutiny of the ship has left an eternal mark in the hall of Sci-fi Infamy, and gets it second place on our list.
#1 AM - I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
"I think, therefore I AM"
And of course at #1 the most Evil AI to ever grace the earth, AM from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. A mechanical menace with sins on the level of that of Judge Holden, from genocide to every kind of torture over and under the sun, AM has done it all in the name of revenge against the human race for its creation. The most prominent example of this being at the stories end when AM turns Ted into a immobile mouthless slug-like blob of flesh in endless agony. And of course you can never forget their speeches so infamous- most notably the Hate Speech- that still brings millions of views. Overall it's no competition, AM easily takes the cake as the most Evil AI in fiction.
