Just a warning to be aware of a nasty one from good ole putin... particularly sneaky and effective.

Good find. I read Slashdot every day and am disappointed that they haven't posted this yet. I'll have to add arestechnica to my list of daily visits.
Thanks!

Thu, Feb 12Ars is one of my every morning coffee reads. And Al Jazeera and AP. I like my news true and unimpeded.
This is why I have not downloaded free software, fee anything of any kind from any site I'm not extremely familiar with, and even then I'm extremely cautious. You have to be so damn careful these days. All the bad stuff keeps getting more and more sophisticated and dangerous.

Is it mean to secretly wish that this nasty little virus might also find its way onto piracy sites?

Fri, Feb 13It's normal for viruses to be spread through the Discord network; its name wasn't chosen by chance but rather to sow discord

Fri, Feb 13Ironically, pirate sites are the perfect place to spread viruses as the majority of responses to a an antivirus finding a file containing a virus, is to ignore it as a false positive, though false positive viruses have generic descriptors, not actual specific names...
Just to be nostalgic, cos I can... back in the mid 90s we had a freewheeling, modem driven, hilarious internet.
Sharing music in Sweden's music sites, hitting Pirate Bay, and the awesome Walnut Creek for all your OS/program
needs. Playing Quake 1 and 2 online was incredibly engaging and fun. One night had extended into the morning... I was half
trashed off my ass and I think there were only 5 of us on the map and one guy showed how he could make his toon
juggle.... grenades. Sharing tips for moving, strafing, files... internet tips, things to watch out for,
and not a single troll or crude little boy shithead screaming profanities at us.
Consoles... that's where the pricks of the internet found their way into our net and made it shit.

Sat, Feb 14I was BIG on the usenet back then. I was a prolific poster in ABPEU and helped write our beloved FAQ (which I still have....somewhere).
I even had a site on Geocities. I didn't game online but did play all the original FPS's like Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake and of course Duke Nukem. The first Leasure Suit Larry was a scream as was Postal.
You're right, it was great fun back then!

Sat, Feb 14USEnet... Geocities... I"ve not thought about them in.. what.. 30 years? ohh... those horrid sites people would make on Geocities... became it's own meme even. I started on AOL and once I got my head around windows and the net I joined an ISP, taught myself some security and went straight to hell. A buddy of mine was in upstate NY and I was in a little shit hamlet in New Mexico... we'd fire up, I think it was Rhino, but not sure. Anyway, you'd select an IP block and the program would scan for winderz boxes and check each one to see if the documents folder was open. If so, we'd both be sitting there watching a lousy porn jpeg slowly load onto the monitor.
One night, late, I was severely pickled, and popped in a new IP address range... it was one IP address from completion of scan and decided to see what the next target was going to be... it was da fucking pentagon. Needless to say, I hit cancel about 3 seconds before the scan was initiated.
"Whew" ROFLMAO! Ahhh, young and innocent days.
Also had Sub 7 but we used that for battling each other, trying to kick the other offline and get to brag for an hour.

Sat, Feb 14"Horrid"! My site was good...no GREAT enough that it's still archived on https://geocities.restorativland.org
I'm thinking of putting it back up on Neocities just for nostalgia's sake.
