The 4TB external hard drive I bought in the beginning of Feb is dead. All my daz stuff was on there. Right now, I just cannot justify spending almost $700 on an SSD 4 TB external drive. Not to mention, reinstalling all that stuff. AGAIN. I'm going to take some time and really research external drives and see what my options are. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to reply with them.

I feel the pain, lost my oldest drive last month, but it was 10years old to be fair. lots of vintage poser and daz stuff, all hrdi's, blender projects and texures collection gone but thankfully my main library was on a different drive.
I had another external drive fail years ago and the solution was the break it out of its casing and just plug it in internally with sata cables, you never know, might work for you.

You might consider using a HDD to store runtime. For a while I had mine on a SSD, didn't really notice much of a difference, ended up moving my content back to HDD and using SSD for games which I do notice a diference hdd vs ssd for load times

Sat, Apr 04I killed 2 HDDs in the last 2 weeks. So, no, I think SSD, a really good one is my best option.
Depending on the state of the HDD and the type of errors/malfunctions, your data might be completely salvageable. Ask your local computer store, I managed to salvage a lot of data from 15+ years old HDDs I thought were dead for less than $100.

Sat, Apr 04It's all DS downloads, so I'm not worried about salvaging it. I'm just pissed that it died less than 2 months after I bought it. This is the second HDD external I lost in the last month. To be fair, the other one was at least 12 years old. I'm looking at SSD's that can stand up to daily use, specifically for content creators, etc. The HDDs were really made for storage moreso than daily use. At least that is what my research has turned up so far.

Sat, Apr 04I'm sorry if I misunderstood your problem.
I bought many HDD over the years and yes, the past 5 years, most of them are junk and die real fast.
LaCie HDD tend to last longer than WD & Seagate, but that's just me.

Sat, Apr 04It was a Seagate. Will never buy their products again. I'm going to try and fight with them to get at least some of my money back.

Sun, Apr 05Odd, my Seagate hard drive has been working for about a year. Guess I'm lucky to geta good model, but I'd probably back up my files just in case.
I feel ya! I had to do all that just before christmas when mine died . Im still missing some things even now , did'nt have chance to back every thing up .

The tech forums are the best place to find out about reliability. Places like Toms Hardware will compile reports from Backblaze (https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/resources/hard-drive-test-data ) and let us know what to buy.
HOWEVER....you can't depend on just one drive to keep your stuff safe. Three separate drives is NOT overdoing it. Also, discrete HDDs are more reliable than portable drives. Use HDD caddies from Sabrent (know for being reliable and robust) and the single drive caddies from Nextstar.
I have two computers, with one never going online. I also have a few discrete drives. My important stuff gets duplicated four times on four different drives. I lost stuff once, never again.
And DON'T...absolutely don't use or trust online storage.

Sat, Apr 04I've hit Tom's a number of times and other geek sites as well. I did some research and found one. Spent way more than I wanted to, but it's still over $2k cheaper than a second computer. That was another option I considered. I bought an external SSD for content creators, designers, modelers, etc., that was made specifically to be used daily for work.
I can take it as a deduction next year at least.
I have a separate HDD for my web design clients, and that one only gets used for monthly backups if I have updates to do. I did have another older drive, and that one just died last week. That one I lost a lot of stuff, so I might take that one and see if they can salvage what's on it.
I'm going to look into pulling the stuff from the drive into a scene folder when I'm creating. There must be a way to do that with Daz. I did it all the time with Vue.

I don't really know much about modern hardware anymore... but I was taken aback when I saw the price you quoted for a 4 TB SSD. Are those things really that expensive... or did you pick out a special professional-grade model?

Sun, Apr 05A lot of the drives on Amazon have been rated badly because of people selling junky ones as new. I went directly to the Samsung website and bought a professional grade model from them.
As far as brand I can recommend Western Digital and Kingston. Both SSD and HDD are good and durable.

I consider WD western Digital to be reliable. I had a Seagate fail on me in 2017, never bought another one of those either.

Sun, Apr 05Was it a bare HDD or a portable drive with a Seagate HDD in it?
When discussing reliability you have to take that into account. As I learned the hard way, the most reliable drive is only as good as it's enclosure/caddy or container. If the drive controller fails, it's normal to blame the drive itself.

Mon, Apr 06it was a portable drive, usb connection, if i remember 500 gb, it's almost a decade ago, they may be better now.
This is the one I ordered. I won't order anymore drives from Amazon. I found multiple complaints from people about the failure rate of the drives from Amazon. This was one of the highest rated drives for heavy, daily use. It's made for people like us, for content creators, modelers, etc.

Mon, Apr 06Pawngame mentioned that you might be able to salvage it. Ask your IT folks (if you work somewhere that has them) or your local gamer folks for recommendations. Unfortunately there's lots of places that will make BIG promises but really don't know much beyond how to use commonly available software. The chain stores are the worst since they hire almost anyone and don't pay well.
Not sure if you've tried this route; but maybe a separate drive and enclosure. An NVME ssd drive and a separate enclosure (with actual heat management if not active cooling) to put it in. Probably not as portable as that Samsung; but those NVME drives are designed for continuous use in desktops.
