This morning I received an email saying that Daz& was released and I checked the Daz forums and people are angry about so many bugs in a program that isn't even in beta.

To make matters worse, they don't let you download the .exe file, only the manager, just because they feel like it.

12 Hours agoDAZ 6 is only available through DIM. There is no manual download for it. The last version of DAZ Studio that was available as a manual download seems to be 4.24.0.4.

12 Hours agoI refuse to use DIM, so not being able to download the installer and back it up means that 4.24.0.4 will probably be the last version of DAZ Studio I ever use. Everything in my library now works with this version, and I'm not buying anything from DAZ anymore anyways, so I'm not worried about wasting money on content that won't work with the version I have installed.
Apparently, at least according to a few DAZ forum members, there's no uninstaller either. They had to go through their PC and uninstall all DS6 files manually. Personally, it sounds like it wasn't ready, but then is every Studio version ever ready? Each version always feels like a constant work in progress. "We'll fix it next time..."
I doubt I ever use it anyway. Definitely not with my current hardware. My machine is 10 years old now and I'm still using DS4.12 (the last build that supports my GPU). Can't afford a new PC, so I'm safely confined to a Studio version that works for my needs

Let someone else deal with the bug reports is my motto. In any case I do have DAZ 6 Beta installed, it's going to be worth the upgrade once the kinks are worked out. It might take the odd week or two.
I'll stick with 4.24 in production in the meantime.

I'm just wondering if this is another one of those DAZ things: instead of following the usual numbering scheme (after 4.24, it should be 5.0, right?), they just skip an entire version number

Thu, Jun 04It was originally DAZ 5, This explanation by namffusk over on the DAZ board is probably correct:
Daz uses the Qt cross-platform software - Studio version 3 was based on Qt 3, Studio 4 used Qt 4. Qt 6 has been out for some time - so my guess is that Studio 5 would have been based on Qt 5 but Qt 5 has been replaced by Qt 6 . . . (see tag line about change).
QT version 6 came out in 2021, Daz 5 was in development before then making it likely that's the reason it switched over to 6.

I haven't updated Daz since they got rid of 3DL, because I still use Line Render sometimes. So all this says to me is that my ability to utilize new releases from the Daz store going forward might be a bit limited.

Having looked it over, read through all the comments in their forum, I'll wait. I have (thanks to a nice person here) DS 4.22 downloaded. And I also have DS 4.24 downloaded from my account page. I made backups of both too. Yeah, I'm good.

Thu, Jun 04I would not have known to find this directly without your post, so thank you. I at least have DS 4.24 downloaded from my account page. Thank you.
no rush at all. i've got 4.12 on one, 4.16 on another and 4.21 on the third just for testing purposes. no intention on upgrading ever again. DS can hobble along into the future with its errors.

Thu, Jun 04You don't need multiple PCs to use multiple versions! One folder, one version, it's that simple.
Currently, on my PC, in the folder
C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\, I have the following subfolders:
DAZStudio4.12\
DAZStudio4.24.03\
DAZStudio6 Public Build\
Great! I can use all three simultaneously.

18 Hours agomultiple pc, cause I can be doing other work or playing an intensive videogame while the other computer is rendering an animation sequence in DS. i have the space, more computers just means i never throw the old ones away if they still run.

17 Hours agoI understand this organization very well.
I was taking the opportunity to provide a technical solution for people who want to have multiple versions of the same software on a single machine.

This is exactly the kind of low performance upgrade, that killed Poser.
(big hurray Promotions about pretty much nothing)
Hey, unlike Poser, DAZ studio is at least still free.

Good to see you started this thread, bu_es, as I was about to
I was eager for an updated version, as I finally upgraded my work machine to one with a 5000 Series RTX after 11 years with the old 1080ti and DAZ had yet to accommodate the newer cards from their foundation source. Daz 6 ostensibly should do the trick, but I'm in no hurry to install it, as all accounts suggest it's quirky and possibly unstable in some regards.
No .exe files or uninstaller? i imagine they're under the curve to update, but releasing in such a state seems to be poor judgment. They'll likely fix it at some point. but until then I'll set up scenes with 4.24 on the new machine and render on the laptop with the 4.22 and the card it can handle. By the DAZ 6 is running properly, the 6000 series cards might be out, and the wheel will turn again.

19 Hours agoI know little about coding and software developing, and can barely assemble a look-worthy scene, so understanding what drives the DAZ development team is above my grade. Bitching about it when it makes my work worse isn't

12 Hours agoDAZ has becoming the gate keeper they swore they weren't during the Encryption Wars. From the moment they released the DAZ Bridges, they also weren't available as a manual download, and when I complained about this, they told me that the bridges were "too complicated for a mere installer, and needed to be downloaded and configured through DIM" -- which is absolute bullshit. It's about control, which is fine, but they could at least be honest about it. Same thing here: they're going to be the gate you have to go through to install your software. My bet would be that there will never again be a manual download for DAZ Studio, just like you have to go through the Steam client to download and play your games.
There is no difference on the vendor side right? I stopped "updating" DS long ago, never bothered much with new versions since they started turning useful tools into rentware, and am hoping to just avoid the new version altogether lol.

19 Hours agoI heart ya. I keep most of my content on a flash drive so it can be moved between machines, but there is still a lot of stuff DL'd from Install. Some stuff, like Stonemason's, doesn't seem to work if installed otherwise.
Keeping it all working is always a struggle.

19 Hours agoI have multiple machines also on a wired network and I use one of the machines as the common library. You have to set the shared directory up with a drive letter for DAZ to work correctly. Being that I have terrabytes of content, flash drives really aren't an option

17 Hours agoThe working flash drive for me 4TB...storage backups are smaller. Fortunately setting up directories in DAZ is pretty simple. Keeping track of all the folders can be more challenging, particularly if you're into a lot of genres and can't miss a deep sale.

17 Hours agorecently ordered a 4tb drive so I'm pretty much in good hands to finally move all of my shit onto this PC
I'm in no rush either.
Although I will say, I'm open to the idea of a competent chatbot that can legitimately help with technical troubleshooting or problem-solving and on-the-spot micro-tutorials for specific tools and functions. Maybe automate certain actions or workflows within the constraints of my specifications.
If I have a redline, it's whether or not the desirable features that would justify an upgrade are subscription-paywalled. Considering the times we're living in, the concern that we could be walking into a Lucy's Football bait-and-switch where the good stuff is free at first but then OOP! Sike! Now it's not is somewhere between non-zero and non-negligible.
I'm gonna need more information, but I'm not completely disinterested here.

I've been playing with the beta for a little while. Very tiny performance improvement, if there is any. Other than that, I'm not sure what's new other than the splash screen, some colors, and making sure your not available unless you pay a subscription scripts don't work anymore (Old Render Queue for me, I don't use anything else).

I installed it, it's not thaaaaaaaaat different from 4.x (the major rev jump to 6 is just cynical hype mongering bullshit)
they managed to screw up UI fonts, I don't think there is a way to configure this so enjoy squinting I guess
for no reason at all, they changed preview lighting to only use headlamp mode so if you were used to the default scene lighting's contrast setup, you will miss that
the strand based hair tools are marginally less clunky now, which is good, but they're still pretty clunky (no keybinds to change brush settings e.g. so a lot of clicking still required)

39 Minutes agoHave you noticed an improvement to render times? What graphic's card are you running?
I'll wait myself and stick to 4.24. That free to download and try had me think they actually went Adobe route. They didn't as it turns out. They just didn't provide exe. version.

Not a hope that I'm going to bother with this. It's a perfect example of enshitification. All the problems we've spent years complaining about are still there. I'll bet that they used some AI BS to write the code. It was almost 5 years since DazRaub announced Studio 5, and after all this time, this is the slop we get?
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/506346/daz-studio-5-development-update
And where is DazRaub? I understand that there was a HUGE change when that greedy, short-sighted, parasite Thornton James came on the scene. DazRaub was always great about keeping us informed on what was happening with Studio.
I'm putting my hopes behind the new free tool that was just announced here.
