Mad Librarian: every DAZ product you own, in one window (updates and support)

This is the home thread for Mad Librarian, a Windows app that puts every DAZ Studio product you own into one catalog. Smart Content has the categories, but only for products that came with metadata; the Content Library has everything, but only as folders. Mad Librarian puts both together, with the category tree over everything, including the content you unzipped yourself. Double-click an item to load it into the DAZ Studio you have open.

Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), with DAZ Studio 4 and DAZ Studio 6.

We post here when there is an update, and answer questions here too. For anything about your order or your key, please send us a RenderHub message instead, so it stays private.

WHAT IT DOES

* One catalog for every library DAZ Studio 4 and 6 know about, Daz Connect included, with icons, a category tree over everything and one search box

* Content with no metadata is cataloged by what each file says it is, so Lost and Found stops filling up

* Seven ways to browse: Categories, Content types, Folders, Products, My Folders, your saved Scenes, and what is in the DAZ scene right now

* Makeup that crosses generations and genders (Genesis 9, 8.1, 8, 3 and 2), stacks instead of replacing, and comes off one look at a time

* Looks: save what a figure is wearing, makeup included, and replay it on another character

* Drop vendor zips on the window to install them; stale texture paths in their presets are repaired

* It never modifies or deletes a vendor's file

* Built for big libraries: tested on 137,000 items, under 2 seconds to start after the first build

GETTING STARTED

1. Run MadLibrarian-Setup.exe from the zip. It installs for your Windows account only, so there is no administrator prompt.

2. The first start reads your DAZ libraries and builds the catalog. On a big library this takes a little while, once; later starts are quick.

3. Activate: open the license window from the About button, paste the key from our RenderHub message and press Activate. If you don't, Mad Librarian opens the license window by itself after 10 minutes.

4. To load items into DAZ Studio, press the button on the line at the top of the window that says Mad Librarian needs to finish installing. Windows asks for permission once.

QUESTIONS THAT COME UP

* Where is my key?
In a RenderHub message from us, within a day of buying.

* Activating says the license server "could not be reached" or "did not answer", right after the first start.
Mad Librarian is probably still busy reading your library. Wait a minute and press Activate again, or restart Mad Librarian and activate then.

* How many computers?
One key works on two computers at a time. To move it, press Deactivate this computer in the license window on the old one, then activate the new one.

* Does it need the internet?
Once, to activate. After that it works offline for up to 30 days at a time and checks in by itself.

* Lost your key?
The "Lost your key?" part of the license window is for copies bought on our own website. Send us a RenderHub message and we will send it again.

* How do updates work?
Mad Librarian updates itself. When an update is ready, the line at the top of the window offers Restart now. You never need to download it again.

* Anything else?
The Help button in the app (or F1) explains every feature.

And what happens when your license server is no longer available but the software still functions? It's not like that's never happened in the history of software. I understand your desire to protect your IP, but license servers are somewhat problematic for some people.

Fair question, and you're right that it has happened.

How it works: Mad Librarian needs the license server once, to activate. After that it runs offline and checks in by itself; a copy that can't reach the server keeps working for up to 30 days from its last check-in. The server runs on Cloudflare's network, the same one that delivers the updates, not on a machine of ours.

And our commitment: if we ever have to shut the license server down, we will first publish a final update that removes the activation check, so every copy keeps working without it. Mad Librarian updates itself, so that update reaches everyone who has it installed.

Sounds fair.

And this scans multiple runtimes and shows all content of runtimes and not just a few entries here and there?
I have purchased other products that talked a great game but NEVER delivered, even after numerous updates

Yes. Mad Librarian finds every content library DAZ Studio knows about by itself (DAZ Studio 4 and 6, including Daz Connect and DAZ’s built-in content), and “Add foldertakes in any library DAZ never registered. It then catalogues every file in them, not just the products that came with metadata. Content with no metadata at all is catalogued, gets an icon and is searchable, because Mad Librarian reads each file’s own type. On the library it was built against, 36.8% of everything installed had no metadata and was invisible to Smart Content.

I understand the skepticism. If something in your libraries doesn’t show up, post here or message me, and I’ll fix it.

Mad Librarian 1.34.0 is now available. Installed copies update themselves; Restart now appears at the top of the window when the update is ready.

Fix for "Duplicate Formulas Found"
DAZ Studio shows this notice when a morph file contains the same formula twice, usually because the morph was saved again after its rigging was adjusted. Tools Fix "Duplicate Formulas Found" finds the affected morph files in your libraries and removes the duplicate copies, which DAZ Studio already ignores. We verified in DAZ Studio that the figures look and pose exactly as before. Each fixed file is kept in its original form, and Undo restores it.

The first start shows how many files have been read and which folder is being read, and Cancel stops it.
Libraries on a hard disk are read one folder at a time, which is faster on that kind of drive.
If DAZ Studio lists a whole drive, or a folder that is mostly not DAZ content, as a content library, Mad Librarian names it, and Settings Libraries DAZ Studio lists can skip it.

Poser content installed by hand
Figures, poses, hair, props, faces, lights, cameras and materials installed by hand into a Runtime folder are now listed. Tick Poser files under What to show; they appear under Categories Poser, arranged as in Poser's own library.
