The Watcher at the Gate

Earth — One Billion Years From Now
The last sunrise humanity ever watched was not beautiful.
There had been no cities beneath it. No aircraft crossing the sky. No voices coming through the streets. No children pointing upward in wonder.
There was only wind.
It moved across the dead continents, carrying dust over the bones of mountains that had once stood beneath forests. The oceans had vanished centuries before, boiled away molecule by molecule beneath a Sun that had grown steadily brighter.
Earth was dying.
It had been dying for so long that no living human remembered what it meant for the planet to be young.

The Sun was entering the final stages of its life. Its hydrogen reserves were dwindling. Its core was contracting while its outer layers expanded, preparing for the slow violence of its red giant phase.
Humanity had known this would happen.
They had known for billions of years.
And they had left.
Long before the oceans disappeared, humanity had spread beyond Earth. First to Mars and the moons of the outer planets. Then to artificial worlds. Then to distant stars.
Eventually, Earth became a place spoken of in history lessons.

Then mythology.
Then almost nothing at all.
Almost.
Because someone had been left behind.
He stood at the edge of what had once been the Atlantic Ocean.
His body was blackened ceramic and titanium, designed to withstand temperatures that would have killed a human instantly. His face had no mouth, only two narrow lenses that glowed faintly beneath a hood of armored plating.
His designation was W-01.

The first and last Watcher.
He had been built with one purpose:
Observe Earth.
Record its final days.
Transmit what remained of humanity's birthplace to whoever might still be listening.
His creators had given him enough power to last for ten million years.
Then one hundred million.
Then five hundred million.
Every generation of humanity that survived had returned to him, replacing his systems, repairing his body, upgrading his memory.
Until eventually there were no humans left who remembered building him.

And then there were no humans left who remembered Earth.
But the Watcher remained.
He remembered everything.
Every ocean.
Every forest.
Every city.
Every human voice stored in his memory.
He remembered the first person who had ever spoken to him.
Do you understand why you're here?
The Watcher had answered:
"To observe."
The man had smiled.
"No. To remember."
That distinction had remained in his memory for a billion years.

Now the planet was silent.
The Watcher stood alone beneath a copper-colored sky.
His sensors detected the Sun's increasing radiation.
SURFACE TEMPERATURE: 89C
He looked toward the horizon.
There had once been water there.
He had recorded the ocean's retreat.
First, the beaches disappeared.
Then the shallow seas.
Then the great oceans themselves.
He had watched clouds become rare.
He had watched the atmosphere thin.
He had watched the final rain fall.
He had recorded the date.
He still remembered the sound.

Rain.
A sound he had not heard in 43,000 years.
His memory played the recording.
For a moment, the dead world seemed alive again.
Drops struck his metal shoulders.
Children laughed somewhere in the distance.
A woman shouted for someone to come inside.
Birds cried in the trees.
The recording lasted eleven seconds.
Then silence.
The Watcher shut it off.
There was no reason to torture himself.
Except that he had never been programmed to stop remembering.

His antenna turned toward the stars.
For the first time in 6,000 years, something had changed.
A signal.
Weak.
Artificial.
Impossible.
The Watcher froze.
His systems immediately began analyzing it.
UNKNOWN TRANSMISSION DETECTED.
He listened.
Nothing.
Then—
A pulse.
Another.
Three short signals.
A pause.
Then three more.
The Watcher's oldest communication protocols awakened.
He searched his memory.
There was only one pattern remotely similar.
A distress code.
Human.
His processors raced.
He turned toward the northern sky.
A point of light appeared.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
The Watcher stared upward.
They were not stars.
Ships.
Massive ships.
Moving silently through the darkness.
For the first time in thousands of years, the Watcher experienced something his creators had never anticipated.
Hope.
He transmitted immediately.
THIS IS EARTH.
He waited.
Nothing.
He transmitted again.
THIS IS EARTH.
Still nothing.
The fleet descended.

The first ship entered the atmosphere three hours later.
It was enormous, silver and black, surrounded by a shield of blue light.
The Watcher watched it descend through the boiling sky.
His systems recognized the design.
Not modern.
Ancient.
He searched his archives.
The answer appeared.
HUMAN COLONY VESSEL — ARK CLASS.
But there was something wrong.
The vessel was more than nine hundred million years old.
The Watcher's processors struggled with the impossible conclusion.
It had left Earth before his own construction.
Before the first colonies.
Before recorded human history.
Before almost everything he knew.
The ship landed in the ruins of what had once been North America.
Its doors opened.
Figures emerged.
The Watcher raised his weapon systems.
Then lowered them.
They were human.
Or something descended from humans.
Their bodies were taller and thinner. Their eyes were adapted to artificial light. Their skin was pale beneath protective suits.
One of them stepped forward.
She looked at the Watcher.
The Watcher looked at her.
Neither spoke.
Then she removed her helmet.
The Watcher's facial-recognition systems searched his ancient database.
Nothing.
The woman smiled sadly.
"We finally found you."
The Watcher remained motionless.
"Identify yourself."
"My name is Mara."
"Species?"
She hesitated.
"Human."
The Watcher processed the answer.
Then asked the only question that mattered.
"Where have you been?"
Mara looked toward the swollen Sun.
"We were coming home."
The Watcher turned his gaze toward the dead horizon.
"You are too late."
"I know."
"Earth is no longer habitable."
"I know."
"The oceans are gone."
"I know."
"The biosphere is extinct."
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
"I know."
The Watcher stared at her.
"Then why did you return?"
Mara looked at him for a long moment.
Then she reached into her suit and removed a small object.
A child's drawing.
The paper was yellow with age.
It showed a blue planet.
A yellow Sun.
And a stick figure standing beside a tree.
At the bottom were four words.
WE WILL COME HOME.
The Watcher scanned it.
His processors began searching his oldest memories.
Something stirred.
A voice.
A man's voice from one billion years ago.
Do you understand why you're here?
The Watcher answered.
"To remember."
Mara nodded.
"No one remembered anymore."
She looked at Earth.
"So we came back to find someone who did."
The Watcher stood perfectly still.
For a billion years, he had believed his purpose was to watch humanity's birthplace die.
Now he understood.
He had not been guarding a grave.
He had been guarding a promise.
________________________________________
Behind Mara, the other humans began unloading equipment.
They would not save Earth.
They could not.
The planet was too far gone.
The Sun was too powerful.
There was no restoring the oceans.
No rebuilding the forests.
No returning the dead.
But they could stand upon the soil of their ancestors.
They could remember.
Mara walked toward the Watcher.
"Come with us."
The Watcher looked at his hands.
They were covered in dust.
He looked at the dying world.
"My instructions are to remain."
Mara smiled.
"Then remain."
She pointed toward the horizon.
"We'll build a memorial here."
The Watcher considered this.
"For whom?"
"For everyone."
The Watcher looked at the stars.
Billions of them.
Perhaps somewhere among them were descendants of humanity who had forgotten Earth.
Perhaps they would never return.
Perhaps this small group was all that remained.
Perhaps this was the end.
Or perhaps it was the beginning of something else.
The Watcher turned toward the planet one final time.
He activated his transmitter.
For one billion years, he had sent the same message into the darkness.
EARTH REPORT.
He transmitted again.
But this time, he added something new.
EARTH REMEMBERS.
Then he turned away from the dying Sun.
For the first time since humanity had built him, the Watcher walked toward the people waiting for him.
Behind them, Earth continued its long journey toward darkness.
Above them, the Sun burned brighter.
And beyond the horizon, the stars waited.
The Watcher had spent a billion years guarding the past.
Now, at last, he had been given a future.
