The Skull and Spike Inn sat on the hill for the two centuries since Sean's great grandfather built it using stones from a ruin at the same spot. Sean had inherited the position of Inn keeper when his father became too feeble to run it. His only help was a village girl, Lana, who served as barmaid and waitress.

That evening a traveler named Alys had brawled with three locals, knocking them all unconscious and then asked for more drink. Once he'd finished preparing the meals for the three, Sean had decided to throw the traveler out.
