The steam effects are created by compositing in Photoshop using the Deviney, Steam, and Smoke brushes. The trick is to use them together on a transparent layer to draw the swirls of the desired color, but also in layer masks to make the parts of the image that emerge from the steam disappear or appear.

So funny, and I LOVE the Genie washing powder box. This is something, I still have to conquer: creating (as opposed to applying different) textures.
