John’s been away doing what he does best, losing himself in a case. I’ve been keeping the office running in his absence by balancing the books and taking the occasional phone call. We usually greet new clients together as it keeps things professional, fair. Still, I thought, just this once, I could handle it alone.

The woman seemed pleasant enough at first. I offered her coffee, a cigarette, even tried to make her feel at ease. Her smile was polite but distant, her voice seemed practiced, like every word had been weighed before it left her mouth. I could feel the air change before she even moved.

Her hand slipped into her pocket, and instinct pulled mine toward my purse. I felt the metal grip in my fingers just as she drew first, her gun already aimed at my face. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then she smiled, cold and composed. “I wouldn’t want to stain such a wonderfully cliché office with blood now would I... Madeline?The way she said my name told me she knew far more about me than she ever should have.
