Xell's mistress wanted soup for dinner. Mistress had sent her to the butcher's for smoked sausage. On the way back, she had stopped at the boulangerie.

Xell took a short-cut through an unsavory part of town as she was both accompanied by the house bulldog and worried that the soup would burn.

A rough looking man stepped from a side street, holding a gun.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, sir. Clarence will surely bite you," Xell said.

He responded, "That little thing? I'll kick him across the street!"

"Oh no, sir. This is Charles. Clarence is behind you," Xell responded.

And then from behind the would-be robber at the level of his shoulders, he suddenly felt hot breath.

He dropped the gun in terror.

"Thank you, Charles and Clarence. There'll be fine bone for you this evening," Xell said as the three of them watched the man run away at top speed.
