Capt. Cathy - The Keeper's Chamber
3D Render by Edheldil3DThe Keeper's Chamber
As the massive gate closed silently behind them, an almost tangible silence settled over the chamber. The air was cool and stale, carrying the scent of ancient stone, dust, and time itself. No one had entered this place for thirteen years. Yet it remained remarkably untouched, as if it had patiently waited all this time for its rightful Keeper to return. The first chamber was simple, yet filled with quiet dignity. Dominating the far wall was a monumental mural depicting a woman dressed in a deep blue robe adorned with countless stars. Above her outstretched right hand floated a golden sphere. Only upon closer inspection did Joy realize that it wasn't part of the mural at all. It was real—an ancient artifact carefully embedded within the wall itself.
On either side stood two metallic Guardians. Motionless. Silent. Like statues.
Joy stopped. She studied the woman's face for a long time. It felt strange. The longer she looked, the more familiar it became. Finally, she asked quietly,
"That's her... isn't it?"
Nebulor stepped beside her.
His eyes rested on the mural as well.
"Yes."
For a moment, he said nothing more. Joy pointed toward the golden sphere.
"And what's that?"
Nebulor remained silent for a brief moment before answering calmly.
"It bears the Light."
Joy waited for him to explain further. Instead, he simply smiled.
"Another time."
He noticed how deeply absorbed his daughter had become.
"Wait here for a moment," he said softly. "I'll be right back."
With that, he disappeared through a narrow passage leading into the room beyond.
---
Nebulor came to a halt. Nothing had changed. A stone table. Shelves filled with ancient books. A handful of personal belongings. Everything lay beneath a thin layer of dust. It looked as though someone had left the room in the evening, expecting to return the following morning. Only that morning had taken thirteen years to arrive. Slowly, his gaze wandered across the room. On one shelf rested a small crystal. He carefully picked it up. A faint smile appeared on his face.
"You always insisted it would sing in the sunlight."
He looked at the crystal for a long moment.
"I never believed you."
For the briefest instant, he thought he could hear her laughter again. Gently, he placed the crystal back where it belonged. His eyes fell upon a stone alcove. Inside lay the robes of the Supreme Keeper, carefully folded. They had remained there for thirteen years. Untouched.
Not preserved as a memory...
...but as though they had simply been waiting for their owner to return.
Slowly, Nebulor stepped closer. His fingers brushed lightly across the pale fabric. In his mind, he saw that final morning. His wife had smiled. Joy had slept peacefully. None of them had known it would be their last day together. He stood there in silence for a long time.
Then his eyes caught a small metal nameplate resting on a nearby shelf. It was simple. Only a few words had been engraved into it.
Property of the Supreme Keeper
And beneath them...
...a name.
His thumb slowly traced the letters.
"Henrik..."
He whispered the name so quietly that it barely reached his own ears. It was the first time in many years that he had spoken it aloud. Closing his eyes for a long moment, he let the silence settle around him. Then he carefully placed the plaque back.
With calm, deliberate movements, he removed the black uniform the galaxy had come to know as the attire of Lord Nebulor.
In its place, he put on the simple robes of the Supreme Keeper. For a brief moment, he regarded his reflection in a polished metal panel. The man staring back at him had grown older. Marked by time. Yet there was something in his eyes that had long been absent. He gave himself the slightest nod. Then he turned toward the exit. The man who left that room was no longer Lord Nebulor. Henrik stepped back into the great chamber.
---
Meanwhile, Joy had moved closer to the mural. Slowly, she raised her hand. Carefully, she placed her fingertips against the carved stone hand of her mother. As though, for just one brief moment, she could truly touch her. A deep humming sound filled the chamber.
Joy flinched.
The two Guardians did not move an inch. Yet deep within them, ancient mechanisms stirred to life. A faint vibration resonated through their metallic bodies. Even the golden sphere shimmered ever so slightly. Only for a heartbeat.Startled, Joy quickly pulled her hand away. The humming ceased immediately.
"Don't be afraid."
Joy turned around.
Her father stood in the doorway. No longer dressed in the black robes of the Lord...
...but in the bright robes of the Supreme Keeper.
She looked at him in surprise.
"You look... completely different."
Henrik smiled gently.
"Perhaps I am."
Joy pointed toward the two Guardians.
"What was that?"
"They recognized you."
"Me?"
"You are the daughter of the Light Bearer."
His eyes briefly drifted toward the golden sphere.
"They know who you are."
Together they sat down on a stone bench facing the mural. For a while, neither of them spoke.
Then Joy asked quietly,
"What was she like?"
Henrik smiled.
"Even before she became the Light Bearer, she possessed a remarkable gift."
"What kind of gift?"
"She could truly understand others. It didn't matter what species they belonged to. She simply... knew what they were feeling."
He couldn't help smiling.
"One day I found her standing in front of a large boulder."
Joy looked at him curiously.
"And?"
"She was talking to it."
Joy laughed.
"To a rock?"
Henrik nodded.
"I asked her, 'Talking to the stones again?'"
"And what did she say?"
"She looked at me and replied, 'At least they listen.'"
Now both of them laughed.
"She was the Light Bearer."
Henrik looked back toward the mural.
"And I was the future Supreme Keeper."
"So... did you have to marry because of that?"
"No."
He gently shook his head.
"The two had nothing to do with one another."
He smiled.
"We simply wanted to."
For a brief moment, his expression softened.
"The day she told me she was expecting a child... I was happier than the day I became Supreme Keeper."
Joy smiled.
"And the day you were born..."
His eyes met hers.
"...was the happiest day of our lives."
The smile slowly faded.
Silence.
After a long pause, Henrik spoke only four words.
"Then the Shadow came."
Joy immediately felt the weight behind them.
"How... did she die?"
Henrik remained silent for a long moment.
"The Shadow attacked our world."
His voice had become calm again.
"When I was a child, the Shadow was nothing more than an old legend. Generation after generation had lived without ever seeing it. The Keepers grew careless. We believed the danger had passed forever."
He closed his eyes briefly.
"We were wrong."
Looking at his daughter, he continued,
"When your mother realized she could no longer stop it, she made a choice."
"What choice?"
"She entrusted the Light to you."
Joy said nothing.
"Not out of duty."
He slowly shook his head.
"Out of love."
Silence filled the chamber once more.
At last, Henrik stood.
"Come."
Joy rose as well.
"Where are we going?"
A faint smile returned to his face.
"Back to your friends."
He slowly walked toward the chamber's exit.
"And if I've judged Captain Cathy correctly by now..."
He glanced toward the doorway with quiet amusement.
"...she's probably trying to get into somewhere she most definitely shouldn't."
Joy couldn't help but laugh.
Together, father and daughter walked toward the exit of the Keeper's Chamber.
