Lately, I've been thinking a lot about what niches - especially in terms of compatibility - DAZ still has left for developers (CC). Two things came to mind: environments and props... and since I have no experience with environments (or mine would end up being very (!!!) minimalist
I started experimenting with everyday props. In this regard, it was - and still is - important to me to maintain a certain level of compatibility between G8 and G9. In this case, that means separate Smart Props for GF8, GM8, and G9.
My question for you: What everyday props would you find interesting? Would it be enough if the props are stand-alones (like a table lamp, for example), or would it be more useful/inspiring to you if the props were smart props that could be held in the hand, for example?
By the way - this 'wish list' isn't meant to be a 'Pushee list' ! In other words, if a great (or even innovative) idea is posted here, every DAZ developer is invited to make the most of it.
To make sure this thread doesn't go unanswered, I'm going to bring PasahRi in right away so he can share some initial ideas

First off: there are tons of great props. Unfortunately, many of them have a catch: they're 'real' 3D props, not DAZ stuff. In other words, not everyone can or wants to use it.
In my opinion, my DG ('Drinking Glass') series has one small flaw: the material and shape don't quite fit the fantasy genre. In my opinion, opaque, cup-shaped vessels would be more suitable for this genre. And if glass is used, then perhaps only semi-transparent and with decorations (such as gemstones).
Speaking of drinking: How about some stoneware mugs or cups? Then you wouldn't have to worry about the fill level and could still do some fun things with it. Imagine an attractive person who has just enjoyed an espresso in the morning sun and is now setting down the cup with the remaining crema on the inside.
Another idea altogether would be, for example, brushes or hand mirrors. The latter, in particular, offers a wide range of possibilities... especially if they are offered as Smart Props (Snap To).
Off the top of my head, I can also think of some (perhaps) tongue-in-cheek rendering props like rolling pins, carpet beaters, torches, or clubs
So, in my opinion, there are definitely still niches in DAZ. The props just need to be Smart Props (which are best suited for use across different G versions) to give even inexperienced users the ability to use them easily.

Sat, May 16No, I was actually supposed to write both. It's always such a hassle juggling two accounts when the mind is already somewhere else entirely

I think one aspect to consider is, will your props be a random selection of items, or will you stick to one or more themes ( modern, historical, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, Wild West, etc ) My own preference would be 'stick to a theme' because then I would know that your items might well be useful to me, if I follow the same theme. I'm sure a lot of useful props were lost when Sharecg shut down, so I expect there is a bit of a vacuum now.

Sat, May 16Hi, thanks for your feedback
As far as I'm concerned, there will be a (wide) variety of props. I'm not a big fan of being guided solely by (expected) sales. More importantly, I have to enjoy the work too
But since this thread is also meant for other DAZ developers, some of them might pick up on ideas from this thread (if any come up
and then work on them in a genre-specific way. Let’s see what happens

I think you're right, props and (minimalist) environments (I prefer vignettes) are turning into Daz3d niche markets (lots of characters out there right now).
One for your specific personalities might be a hand (wash) cloth. The trope of the washcloth over the eyes while lounging or bathing.
Thing's I've hunted for recently are a good quality rubber duck and a single or twin bed that isn't youth themed.
Clutter is another good one, opened delivery boxes, junk mail, keys, and items to make a place look "real". Clutter for the side of the road or sides of the sidewalk (feathers, bits of plastic, just to reduced the manicured look).
Hope that gives you a few ideas.

Sat, May 16Hi, thanks so much for your ideas
The towel idea, for example, could be implemented as a dropable. That would definitely be 100% compatible with all DAZ models... including the dragon
The rest wouldn’t be for me personally (due to my skill level).... but since this thread is also meant for other DAZ developers, I could imagine these ideas serving as inspiration.
Thanks again

Basic smart props are sought after and like @Jackolantern mentioned, with the shutdown of Sharecg, i'm sure there is a big "themed" market for it.
The reason for the lack of it probably is how boring it is to pose smart props + pose controls for each hands, repeat for g8m, etc. But with some scripting i'm pretty sure you could manage to bulk create every day props with a one-click script (provided the Handle is a separate node / child prop, otherwise it gets tricky) which calculates the width of the handle and drives the hand pose controls (then for the other hands, it's just mirroring it).
Looking forward to seeing your products!

Sat, May 16Hi, thanks for stopping by
You're absolutely right: the whole thing with positioning and the corresponding hand poses for different Genesis versions is... hmm, well... a bit of a pain - and if the actual work were reflected in the price, everyone would think I am/was nuts
But somehow it's still fun (for now)... and I hope to keep enjoying it for another 2 or 3 projects from my DG (Drinking Glass) series

The drink props you're doing are a great start, specifically because they can be morphed to show different levels of fullness and liquid angle. My setting involves a lot of luxury and indulgence in a tropical paradise setting, so I often have need for various adult beverages, especially for my ladies who like their colorful girly foo-foo drinks.
One of the first things I think of in terms of wanted props is, various kinds of food props that have multiple versions showing different stages of being eaten: one bite, a few bites, almost gone... that kind of thing. I'm especially interested in indulgent desserts, ice cream sundaes, and such. Same again for various kinds of fruit, and maybe junky sinful stuff like pizza and burgers.
I'm also always on the lookout for environments I can use for my images and stories. Again, my main theme is various forms of tropical paradise and vacation resorts for adults where all kinds of fun happens. This includes things like casinos, bars and clubs, entertainment districts, beaches, and natural beauty, but also activities like beach volleyball, outdoor basketball, jet skiing, eXtreme sports, and American Gladiators style sports entertainment.
That's just me thinking out loud, but maybe that gives an example of how some of us think and what you might want to deliver. Keep up the good work!

Sat, May 16As for Foo-Foo drinks: Liquids are generally very easy to customize in DAZ. As a rule of thumb, 'Glossy Color' works best for materials with a high refractive index. Select a very (!) light color from the bottom of the color palette. For materials with a lower refractive index, you can apply the color using 'Base Color.'
The ice cream idea sounds really interesting. However, I’m somewhat influenced by my early childhood experiences in German gelaterias. So I’d make the bowls the ice cream is served in roughly triangular, cocktail-glass-shaped and made of metal (Chromagan).
We’ve already discussed the issue of half-eaten food in another thread: it’s actually a bit more complicated if you want it to look realistic. Plus—if I think of an apple, for example—you’d probably have to use different hand poses.

Mon, May 18If you don't know about them, Dirty Dishes and its extension offer a lot of food and drinks in various state. Both are by GCJellyfish and sold on Daz3D and a fantasy version should be available soon.
Its always the little things! Bhwhahahaha..(ironic laugh).
The perfect high school...made for filatoon..
The baseball/softball uniform, from what universe? that comes with an actual glove, barely bigger than G8's hand...
The team uniform, with premade team name, no clean textures and everyone is number 5...
Mens dforce workout/gym shorts, that always seem to sit just under the naval....
could probably look around more but vendors tend to promo the whole uniform vs the individual items.
I could go on and most of my frustration is usually from the lack of sports type products. I find it lacking past the basics.
Not aimed at anyone, just my little rant of frustrations over the years. Some of that is on me, I'm really bad with photoshop so outside of slapping some text and such on things, my attempts come out looking pretty bad.

Sat, May 16On the number issue, just load the texture into your favorite photo editing software and change it. It would be a pain for the vendor to have to add a whole list of numbers when they make the product. Glove size, that I can't help you with
Although these days that could also be handled with a decal node if you're using Iray.
Or the LIE for that matter.
Being able to edit textures can save you a lot of grief.

Sat, May 16I imagine this could help a lot for the name and numbers:
https://www.daz3d.com/write-anywhere-plus-advanced-lie-and-aging-tools
You will need a 'clean texture' or overwrite with a good fabric shader.
Of course does not replace the need/wish for more sport products that i usually read many have.

Sat, May 16Gods, I wish I was good with photoshop but I just don't click with editing software outside of the very basics. On the plus side of that, its made me learn more about the environmental, tone mapping, and surface tab settings along with alot of experimenting with lighting so I can generally get the actual look I'm going for in a render without having to worry about post working it.

Developers have two options for adding different numbers to clothing. Both are - unlike the fiddly process users are expected to go through - relatively simple:
A) When creating the 3D garment, define a separate surface group (material group) onto which the numbers will be placed.
Or even simpler:
b) Create a shell for the garment, significantly reduce the default distance, and place the numbers directly on the shell.
Now we just have to convince the 3D Clothing developers

Sports in general would potentially be something, imo. Basketball, soccer, baseball, etc. Basketball could have a independent hoop to 'hang' on any old wall available in an environment for a quick pickup game, include a set of poses and I'll probably be interested.

Sat, May 16I actually can cover most of the basic sports, basketball, tennis, volleyball and can cover the baseball field and bats, etc. Just no baseball glove.
Have a glove made for blender in the wishlist and its looking like its my only alternative if I want to do some of the baseball/softball type scenes. BadKittey3D is going to work on something uniform/number wise I believe though if worse comes to worse I'll force myself into photoshop though ughhh, just not my thing.

Here's an idea that came to me this morning while modeling a DG Tumbler, and I'd like to share it with others: Taiko.
An entire product line can be built around this theme. First, there are the Taiko drumsticks. The basic shape (bachi) is very simple and is held in the fists (right and left). This means the drumsticks can also be used for martial arts or action scenes, for example (win-win).
Then, of course, there are the taiko drums themselves, which come in various sizes, some with identical shapes (stand-alone)
Last but not least, the drummers' poses. There are some very striking, dynamic, and interesting poses. Take a look at a couple of pictures or videos on the subject.

For my part, I have several favorite themes. I like old-fashioned presentation, romance and dance, or even simple everyday scenes. So I look for accessories related to this.
What always causes a problem is that the environments, characters and other accessories (clothes, hair, etc.) take up a lot of space on the hard drive. Sometimes I have to remove more from the PC if I want to use new ones.
I like the sweater that can be changed in the neckline, or the necklace that is dForce.
These accessories take up little space and work well.
In short: Objects that take up as little space as possible, but are still useful, would be useful for many people. I prefer clothes and jewelry. Oh! And makeup.
Plants would also be useful for the natural environment. A wallpaper is enough for the background.

Sun, May 17Hi, thanks so much for your comment
Well - my 3D outfits aren’t everyone’s cup of tea because of their minimalist style (even though they can slip around/down wonderfully
... but one thing that’s already on my to-do list, for example, is a slightly longer (and, above all, wider) version of DropLace (BlingBling hip-hop style, if I can pull it off).
If I try not to go too overboard (or get too off-topic), I might also do a few projects on standard jewelry props (FH and/or SPARKLING) for G8 and G9. We'll see....
Simple (green) potted plants (as standalone props for DAZ) are also on my to-do list... but waaaaaaaaay down at the bottom
Thank you also for bringing up the topic of hard drive resources!
I do have plenty of hard drive space myself (for now)... but sometimes I can't help but cringe when I see simple (!) products that would take up as much hard drive space as 30 of my projects. In my opinion, that shouldn't be necessary (especially when the product still looks like nothing after a long render

Sun, May 17Yes. Unfortunately, the capacity of the hard drive is finite. I don't know (because I'm not familiar with it) whether a complete Poser room with furniture takes up less space than a Daz dress.
The products could also be sorted by season. Or by occasional classification: holiday, sport, art, occupation, etc. Maybe divided into regions and nationalities. The objects and clothing that are characteristic of them.
That's all I can think of for now, what could be needed.

Off the top of my head, provided these are smart props, Belle Epoque fan, umbrella, pocket watch, Pipe, Tea tray, Opera binoculars, Hand mirror, Hairbrush, Absinthe bottle and glass with sugar and spoon and fountain. Maybe they exist but I didn't find them.

There are two things that I would like to see ...
- Broken things - what I mean by that are things in there normal state and then a smashed up version. Such as maybe a normal chair and then that chair smashed into a few different pieces. Or, perhaps, a whole in a wall. Stuff like that.
- Something else that I would like to see are superhero costumes that don't fit. Stuff people would wear to a costume party. Maybe a Superman costume but rigged in such a way that you can tell that it isn't a real costume. I would love to do a story where my characters get dressed up for a costume party. So I would want several different costumes for males and females.

Thu, May 21'Broken Things' sounds interesting. I’ve been thinking recently about broken bottles or glasses... but that’s a bit complicated (due to the shapes etc). It’s different with straight-lined objects like chairs. If breaking them apart is planned from the start, that shouldn’t be a big problem for developers who are up for the challenge. Unfortunately, I’m out of the running in this regard, since my skills in hard-surface modeling are, well... ahem... limited
Clothes that don't fit aren't really props... they're just clothes
And when it comes to DAZ, 'not really fitting' is kind of like trying to combine fire and ice - so it's a bit of a hassle

I would like to see more of them especially female versions.
Hi there,
the problem with the not really fitting cloth , i would fix with a lot of morphs.
That works most of the time very good.

Thu, May 21The vegetables sound good - but how should they be depicted? The way they grow (above) ground (eggplants, tomatoes, etc.)? But what about potatoes, for example? Basically, you’d only have the leafy greens... so a plant that isn’t exactly very decorative
Or should the vegetables be shown as harvested and ready to cook... perhaps with a 'snap-to' feature so they can be held in the hand? Or maybe even both (i.e., growing and harvested)?
When it comes to shovels, wheelbarrows, and the like, I can see how the limited—or even non-existent—availability of these items might be due to the enormous effort required to produce them. Most of the tools mentioned are held with both hands. In addition, (in my opinion) the pose is of crucial importance. And if you think back to how you use a spade (at some point, I think I’ve held one of those things in my hands), you’ll notice that several different poses and hand positions are necessary: when digging, when prying up, when tossing the soil, etc.....
Thu, May 21You're absolutely right, I apologize, I'm used to posing characters often manually and adjusting, but clearly for many people it could be a problem not having a starting pose, even though it is definitely useful for improving one's skills.

Thu, May 21Perhaps you could approach making some of the garden tools differently. How about if you start by creating the poses, for digging, prying up, throwing, leaning on etc, and then make the tools fit the one set of poses. So exactly the same poses could work with a spade, or a shovel, or a garden fork, or a hoe, if the tool is adapted to the pose. A pose for a wheelbarrow might work with a garden roller with just different hand positions.

Thu, May 21Farms too. I rarely see them in their complete form. One person who would be ideal for making one is PW. He makes amazingly detailed environments.

No need to apologize
I'm just trying to respond to the posts from my perspective. Other developers (for whom this thread is also intended) might see things differently and pick up on your idea. So: everything's fine
I’d like to briefly come back to your idea about vegetables, which I find quite interesting as a vegetarian - or rather, a semi-vegan. Would you mind elaborating on this idea a bit? So: vegetables on the vine, harvested vegetables, vegetables in your hand, prepared vegetables (sliced).... or all of the above?

I think I remember seeing a few images by Nena (who, unfortunately, is no longer on Renderhub). There were Topsy and Barny on a farm... and I think there was even a wheelbarrow in the picture. So there must be some farm environments out there somewhere. But since I’m not a fan of any kind of physical labor, I’ve never really been able to get excited about the whole 'rural life' theme

Thu, May 21Hi, hi, hi. You and me both. But I love horses
I do have a barn, but there's no farm around it. I was thinking more of a real farm with a home, a patch of land with those vegetables you guys are talking about. Even if it's just leaves, one could animate picking them from the ground, and the potato comes out or I don't know, watermelons? I love watermelons... and now my cravings are awakening.

I just can't understand why it is lacking so much on the animation front.

Thu, May 21I think the lack of animators means it's not seen as a big market. And the lack of working tools like IK mean there aren't many animators. Dartanbeck seems to be able to make it work.

Thu, May 21That is a great point. A counterpoint, just playing the contrarian, could be that since most have experienced the pain, they have moved on to Blender, Maya, or other tools. If they were to focus on it, it might be a stretch, but it could lure newcomers who would benefit from the ecosystem.

Thu, May 21DAZ has always been really poor at animation, there are much better tools for it. It's not that the market for animation isn't big, DAZ is just not the droid you're looking for.

Thu, May 21It could be that that's my complaint. There are a million tools out there that do it really well (exaggerating the number for emphasis). And there are plenty of developers who have worked on those tools, I bet, who would be available for hire. It really only takes leadership to say, let's give it another shot, but seriously this time. This is exactly what we want, and this is the budget for it.

This morning I saw a great product that immediately sparked another idea for DAZ Props: musical instruments!
Unfortunately, as I've mentioned before, I'm not skilled enough at hard-surface sculpting... but maybe this idea is something for the real experts among us. What fascinates me about musical instruments is the wide range of ways they can be incorporated as DAZ Props: as stand-alone props, as handheld props, or in combination with poses.

Quite a few ideas have already been shared here - thank you so much for your contributions
I'm currently working on one of the ideas mentioned here (I won't reveal any more than that
.... but I already know exactly what abbreviation this (presumably) hodgepodge will go by:
PST
That means: Pushee's Snap-To (props)
Stay tuned

3DSaga has a great idea in another thread: an award medallion with a ribbon
https://www.renderhub.com/forum/14726/looking-for-a-competition-ribbon-with-medallion-for-g8-and-g9
I think it's a very appealing idea, but unfortunately I'm too busy right now to experiment with it. Since there are DAZ Creatives here on Renderhub who already offer necklaces, they might want to take this tip into consideration.
