After hearing about the Cornell University sexual assault case, I read a Facebook post about a mother who asked her teenage son who he thought was responsible. His answer was all 50 fraternity members who received the messages, because not one of them stepped forward to help. A teenage boy understood something that apparently escaped so many college students.

His answer stayed with me, and I kept thinking, what if?

What if just one person had called campus police, contacted one of the young woman's friends, or found some way to intervene? Could her life have taken a completely different path? We will never know.

I deliberately chose not to portray the violence or the young woman involved. I didn't want to add to her pain or turn what happened to her into a spectacle. This artwork is about the people who had an opportunity to help, and the difference just one person might have made.

My hope is that it encourages others to stop and ask themselves a simple question: If I knew someone was in danger, would I look the other way, assume someone else would do something, or would I take action?

All it takes is one person to change history.

Hey Kirsten,

First things first, I absolutely love your render. Pure genius, and pure you.

And as for what happened at Cornell… if that had been my daughter, Holy Jesus above, not one of those A holes would have been strolling across a graduation stage. I can't wrap my head around the things people do, and somehow walk away without consequences.

But you know me, being Irish, the people in charge would suddenly find themselves with a few things to worry about.

What I love most, though, is how deeply you care about others. That's what makes you special, babe. Chin up, the world needs people like you.

Sweet Gein, you have a heart of gold. If it had been my daughter I would have probably been initiating my right to bear arms. In my mind at least. Thank you so much for your kind words. I've been sitting on this render for awhile. My heart was heavy about the whole situation, but I wanted to approach from a place of hope that changes could happen. Ma chère Kirsten, je suis généralement pacifiste, mais face à la violence, nous pouvons tous succomber au côté obscur. Je suis comme toi et Gein ; si j’avais un enfant et qu’il lui arrivait quelque chose, je deviendrais malheureusement parfois un démon vengeur. Votre hommage est vraiment incroyable.
