Scalawagons are apparently the brainchild of John R. Neill, who wrote and illustrated a children's book about them called "The Scalawagons of Oz".

Neill was a regular writer and illustrator for the Oz series of books.

In the fiction space of Oz, scalawagons are the creation of the Wizard of Oz, who makes them from a magical, super-light-weight material called "Oztex", resulting in each scalawagon weighing only 25 pounds.

Their motors are no bigger than goose eggs.

They fly by means of wings that web out when their running-boards pivot out.
