The Weapons Locker
3D Render by RedSpartan(Continuation from 'This Is What They Do')
Mya wanted to get out of there, but something kept her rooted to the spot, staring now in disbelief at the horrible spectacle laid out before her in those hideous tanks.
Shaana strode past her, back towards the entrance to this insidious room.
‘We have to leave!’ she stated in a flat tone, ‘The weapons locker is just along the hall, then we can get out of this place.’
Mya stared at her retreating back ‘But what about them?’ she cried, moving to catch up.
‘What about them?’ Shaana responded coldly, turning into the corridor.
‘They’re still alive. For god’s sake, we have to end their suffering.’
Shaana turned to her, a faint smile crossing her lips. ‘There is no god here.’ She hissed.
Mya stared at her, seeing the glimpse of madness in the girls eyes. Everything she’d suffered at the hands of these monsters had made her insane.
‘We need to turn the machines off that are keeping them alive!’ Mya pleaded.
‘Are you a technician?’ Shaana replied, glancing back towards the room. ‘I’ve studied those controls for hours and can’t see a way of shutting them down without causing more misery.’ She looked down at the floor, as if hiding her shame. ‘I don’t know how long or how much more pain it would cause them to switch them off.’
Mya looked back, to the blue glow issuing from the doorway, struggling to comprehend, to think straight, to find a solution.
‘Then shoot them!’ She finally said frantically.
Shaana looked at her curiously, ‘I don’t have enough ammunition.’ She replied bluntly. ‘I used most of it saving you. I need to get out of here and back home to replenish my supply. There won’t be any I can use in the locker, I took all of that years ago.’
Mya shook her head, unable or unwilling to accept her companion’s cold statement. Home? Years ago? Too many questions flooded her mind. They had to do something for those poor souls. Shaana went to touch her, considered her actions, then pulled back her hand.
‘We’ll come back, another time when it’s safer.’ She said. ‘We can bring what we need and end it all. I have explosives, plenty of bullets.’
Mya looked at her, trying to read some compassion in the girls face but finding nothing. She’d seen too much, experienced pain and degradation no human, especially of her age should have had to endure. She was blank now, numbed to this place, she’s had to turn her emotions off just to survive. Mya understood this in an instant, but hated her for it at the same time…and envied her too.
Shaana walked off with purpose in her stride, the subject apparently closed, and Mya followed her reluctantly, not looking back.
It wasn’t long before they came to the weapons locker, one of many she supposed that would have been placed strategically around the facility for emergencies. This one was already partially opened and Mya was thankful that they wouldn’t have to work out some impossible security protocol to get into it. Shaana indicated the door and stood back, alert and keeping watch.
‘There are other things on this level?’ Mya asked.
‘Yes,’ The girl replied, ‘but we’re on the upper levels now, close to the surface. They’re huge in area and with luck we won’t run into it.’
‘It?’
‘I think it was one of the local primates,’ Shaana began, ‘Large, intelligent compared to the mutations in the lower levels. They augmented it with cybernetics, but not like mine. Cruder, more brutal. I’m not sure what their goal was in creating it, but it’s dangerous.’
Mya opened the locker, considering the girls words. Her knowledge of what had gone on here was remarkable. Inside, resting in a purpose made cradle was a barrel loading shotgun. An ammunition box sat at it’s base, but it only held enough for one full load. She took the gun, weighed it in her hand to get a quick feel for it. Obviously it was confederation in design, but if there was one thing the bastards did well it was create instruments of death. The rotating ammunition barrel was empty and she quickly loaded the available shells into it, flicked off the safety and felt the slight whir as the first round was chambered.
‘Shaana, how long has it been since they evacuated this place?’ She asked finally.
‘I don’t know what Galactic Standard year it is, but it’s been a long time.’
Her response had been ambiguous at best, and Mya eyed her curiously.
‘How old were you when you were abducted?’ She asked, hoping not to open too old a wound.
Shaana looked at her blankly, then at the shotgun in her hands and smiled approvingly.
‘Seventeen.’ She responded
‘But you don’t look much older than that now.’
Shaana smiled crookedly, amused at some irony that only she was privy to. ‘Turns out cybernetic augmentation is a great anti aging treatment.’ And with that she turned and walked off.

Not much action in this one, just a quickie to keep the story moving, but there's quite a bit coming up...Stay tuned...
