The torch spat shadows across the dungeon wall as the undead knight leaned close, his jagged teeth splitting into a grin. The curved blade caressed the elf’s cheek before moving down to the chain where the key dangled. “Shall I cut the trinket from your fleshhe rasped... “or take the neck with it in one stroke?The fire’s glow danced in her wide eyes, but she did not flinch.

The key was no ornament, its weight carried the hush of old blood and sealed doors that should never be open. She could feel it burn against her skin, as though it too knew the danger. Every word from the knight was meant to draw out her fear, to make her surrender the secret willingly. But she held her silence, and in silence there was defiance.

The knight’s grin faltered, irritation cracking through the rot of his face. He pressed harder, close enough that the torch’s smoke curled between them. And that was when her fingers, hidden by the folds of her gown, closed around the hilt of her dagger. Her lips parted, just enough for a whisper the knight would not understand until too late: “It’s not the key you should fear… it’s what waits behind it.
