And just like that, everything she'd been holding in cracked inward. The late nights, the canceled dinners, the cold shoulders, everything she put into her costume for him, the way the line always went quiet when she asked about Candy when he worked late.

She didn’t argue. Didn’t ask what she wanted to ask.
Instead she turned gently, quietly, drifting toward the bar like a ghost.

Each step sank deeper into the carpet. Her body moved on its own but her heart stayed behind at the bottom of that staircase, holding onto what little was left of Monica.

There's this weird things where I'm trying to start and end the story with her name. So this ending doesn't quite feel right, but it is what it is.
