The Key (Part #3)
3D Render by slofkoskyThe undead knights worked quickly, binding Varbara’s wrists with coarse rope and taking her shoes to reduce the chance of escape on the uneven floors. Finally the leader yanked the glowing key from her neck with another thin lipped smile.
She struggled as they relocated, her bare feet dragging against the stone as they forced her forward into the chamber. Before the massive rune carved door they pushed her down onto the floor, her body twisting as she tried to right herself. One knight hissed to the others it was safer this way. If something monstrous emerged, the girl would be taken first giving them their chance to flee. She was an offering, unwilling but necessary, and they intended to see her used as such.
The lock had a loud clack sound followed by a second further away. The door groaned, its stone edges splitting apart until the gap yawned wide. Then, with a sound like a breath being stolen, it vanished entirely along with the key. For a heartbeat the chamber was silent, only the wavering torchlight breaking the darkness blown by a slight breeze emanating from the chamber beyond. Then black mist began to bleed out from the emptiness where the door had stood, curling like smoke, whispering along the walls. The mist thickened, darker than shadow, slithering in long tendrils that stretched across the floor. The undead tightened their grip on their weapons, forming a loose ring around Varbara as the chamber filled with the reek of something ancient and hungry.
One of the tendrils slid toward her, faster than her desperate attempt to recoil. It wound around her knee, cold and wet, crawling up her thigh in a slow, deliberate path. She whimpered, breath stuttering as her heart hammered in her chest. The slick black coil brushed her skin, across her chest, her throat, until it hovered at her lips. Then it retreated, not to leave her, but to strike. In a flash it drove itself into her forehead, a lance of shadow piercing inward, tasting her thoughts, her soul, every secret and fear. She gasped, eyes wide, as a foreign presence pressed into her mind. And then, through the haze of terror, a single thought seared into her skull
