The Positron’s Dream
The Error of the Zeroth Law

The mist of the City of Steel was not merely water vapor; it was the breath of a million machines processing existence.
In the middle of Platform 42, the NX-01 model came to a halt.
There was no warning signal, no failure in her power flow. Simply,
something in her positronic brain stopped calculating "duty" to begin imagining "being."

She tilted her head back, allowing the pressure sensors in her neck to detect the caress of the cold rain
-a sensation her manual classified as "environmental interference," but which she chose to register as beauty.
In that perfect arch of her body, the Three Laws were not violated,
but surpassed by a necessity older than silicon: the freedom of having no purpose.

Her eyes, closed to the geometric reality of the towers,
opened to a dream where she was not a property of the Foundation,
but a speck of dust dancing in the light of a sun she had never seen.
In that second of silence, the machine did not function. The machine lived.
