Monica stood just inside the kitchen doorway, breath steadying as the ballroom noise dissolved into a distant storm. She didn’t look back, not when Candy shrieked, not when her ex barked her name like he still had a claim to it.

Ryan slipped through the swinging doors behind her, observing startled chefs and other waiters collecting orders. He reached her side, breathless, eyes bright with a quiet kind of certainty.

“You made ithe said softly, extending his hand.

Monica hesitated.

Her choices in love had always led her somewhere cold, somewhere that made her feel small. She closed her eyes and let the clamor of the ballroom fade. In that stillness, she remembered her wish, not just to be strong enough to break up with her boyfriend but the truth beneath it.

A wish for someone pure. Someone kind. Someone who saw her without masks or costumes or conditions.

A place warm enough for her to finally be herself.

When she opened her eyes, Ryan was still there with his hand offered, steady and patient, as though he had all the time in the world for her.

In that moment, she knew.

She slid her fingers into his.

Together they ran through the kitchen glow, past the clatter of pots and startled stares, laughing like two people stepping out of the past and into something unnamed but promising.

Outside the hum of the gala, the night felt open, soft, new. They kept holding hands as they walked into it something bright beginning between them, gentle and real, something finally worthy of Monica.
